The greater Tampa Bay area anchors the West Central Florida area, a collection of beautiful stretches of coastline, diverse cultural offerings, pristine natural areas and major attractions. In Pinellas County, the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area is sometimes called Florida’s Sunshine Capital — the sun shines on this part of the state on average an amazing 361 days each year. Nature is showcased at several unspoiled sites. Two area state parks, Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island, offer preserved beachfront and nature trails. But there’s more than nature here.
Fun things to do in the area include harbor cruises,
beachfront dining, renting water trikes and plenty of boutique-style shopping. Stretching out at the southern end of St. Petersburg is the largest park in the county, Fort De Soto Park, made up of five interconnected islands and home to more than 328 species of birds documented over the last 60 years. It rates among the top 10 U.S. beaches and offers visitors a peaceful refuge. Its location in the Gulf of Mexico makes it a haven for birds, including migrating birds stopping to refuel, wintering species and year-round natives. The high number of rare species spotted there makes it a haven for birders as well.
