Campfire Popcorn

Camping Recipes

Something about the slightly smokey flavor of campfire popcorn really makes for an amazing snack when enjoying the great outdoors.  I like to keep a selection of seasonings on hand that enhance the natural woody flavor of the corn.  It is amazingly easy to make with some heavy-duty aluminum foil (make sure that it is the heaviest possible foil available at the store) and a campfire stick.

  • 2 Tbs popcorn kernels
  • 2 Tbs vegetable oil
  • Salt
  • Preferred seasonings

Pull off about an 18″square piece of foil and place the popcorn kernels and the vegetable oil in the center. Sprinkle with salt and your preferred seasonings. Fold the foil square in half and crimp the edges shut. It should look similar to a calzone.  Poke the campfire stick through the folded over edge and hold the packet over the campfire. Do not put it directly in the flames, just where the heat is the highest. Gently shake now and then being careful not to shake the packet off of the stick. If you are cooking on a grill instead of a fire, just make sure that the heat is on low so the packets aren’t directly in the flame and shake using metal tongs. Listen carefully for the popping and remove from the fire when the popping stops. Open the packet carefully as it will be steamy and enjoy!

Seasoning Ideas:

  • Southwestern – Salt, chili powder, cumin
  • Southwestern Twist – same as above but add lime zest
  • Italian – Salt, oregano, black pepper, Parmesan cheese
  • Rosemary Asiago – Salt, fresh rosemary, garlic powder, black pepper, Asiago cheese
  • Ranch – Ranch seasoning packet
  • Sweet & Salty – Salt and brown sugar

As you can see, when it comes to seasoning popcorn, the sky is the limit. If you can mix it, you can pop it. Give it a try and let us know your favorite combo!
