All About Curry Hammock

Curry Hammock State Park is a 1,000-acre reservation of untouched land right in the middle of the Florida Keys. The swamp here is thick, the ecosystem is vibrant, and the scenery is simply breathtaking.

The reason that this particular piece of land has been designated as a park is that it protects a large section of mangrove swamp. Mangrove trees have above-water root systems that make them look like they’ve been planted upside down. Soil gets caught in the mangrove roots, providing a unique environment for a variety of rare and endangered organisms. Once mangrove swamp has been destroyed, it’s difficult to replace, which is why this state park is so important to Florida’s local ecosystem and culture.

This park is full of unique environments, exotic plants, and local animals that are unique to the Florida region. Visiting this park offers a rare look into what Florida was like before it was colonized, making it a popular attraction for both locals and tourists alike.

This park is a great place for all of the outdoor activities that Florida is known for. The ways you can spend your time include:

  • Hiking
  • Camping
  • Bicycling
  • Wildlife Viewing
  • Star Gazing
  • Paddling
  • Fishing
  • Swimming

Water activities are one of the main attractions at the park. In addition to traditional swimming and boating, you can also try more daring activities like kite boarding or snorkeling. Remember to bring a swimsuit, and enjoy the hot showers available in the RV area.

The park rangers at Curry Hammock have designated areas where you can safely enjoy the untouched environment. However, because the mangrove swamps are so delicate and so important to the ecosystem, it’s recommended that you refrain from hiking through or interacting with non-designated areas. Always read the signs, and don’t be afraid to ask a ranger if you have any questions.
