Dave Kelly’s Legacy: The Leader Who Helped Build Florida’s RV Show Experience

News,RV Lifestyle

For many RV owners and future buyers, attending an FRVTA RV Show has become part of the excitement of joining the RV lifestyle.

It is where families compare motorhomes and travel trailers side-by-side, attend educational seminars, explore the latest camping gear, and begin dreaming about their next adventure. What many consumers may not realize is that these experiences are made possible by the Florida RV Trade Association (FRVTA), a nonprofit trade association that works year-round to support Florida’s RV industry and create the very best shopping and educational events for the public.

As Dave Kelly prepares to retire after 38 years with the FRVTA, it is the perfect opportunity to recognize the tremendous role he has played in shaping not just the association, but the RV shopping experience so many consumers enjoy today.

Dave joined the FRVTA in 1987 as Marketing Director, working alongside then-Executive Director Lance Wilson, one of the most respected leaders in the RV industry. Together, they helped grow FRVTA’s consumer shows into destination events that attract RV shoppers from across Florida, the United States, and beyond.

For decades, Dave was one of the driving forces behind the promotion and public visibility of FRVTA’s shows, helping consumers understand why these events are the best place to shop for an RV. His work helped showcase the newest RVs, emerging technology, educational opportunities, and the lifestyle benefits that make RV ownership so special.

Five years ago, Dave stepped into the role of Executive Director following Lance Wilson’s retirement, providing continuity, leadership, and vision during an important transition for the association.

That leadership matters because FRVTA is much more than an event producer.

As a nonprofit 501(c)(6) trade association, FRVTA supports the entire RV ecosystem in Florida, including dealerships, manufacturers, campgrounds, service providers, suppliers, technician training, scholarships, and consumer education. The association’s mission is to strengthen the industry while also making it easier and more enjoyable for consumers to learn about RVing.

That is exactly why FRVTA hosts multi-dealer RV shows.

Unlike visiting one dealership at a time, FRVTA shows bring multiple local dealers together in one location so consumers can compare brands, floorplans, price points, and technologies side-by-side. This creates a better shopping experience because buyers can easily walk from one model to another, compare features in real time, and make more confident decisions.

For first-time buyers especially, these events remove the guesswork and make learning about RV ownership exciting and approachable.

Dave Kelly’s fingerprints are on that consumer experience.

From the way the shows are marketed, to the educational opportunities offered, to the welcoming atmosphere that makes first-time attendees feel comfortable, Dave helped shape the event experience into something far bigger than a shopping trip. For many families, an FRVTA show has been the very first step toward discovering the freedom of the open road.

His contribution to the RV industry goes beyond Florida. Over nearly four decades, his work helped elevate FRVTA into one of the most respected state associations in the country and helped make the Florida RV SuperShow one of the most recognized RV events in North America.

As he enters retirement, Dave leaves behind a legacy measured not only in successful shows, but in the countless families, couples, and retirees who found their perfect RV and began their travel journey because of the experience he helped create.

That is a lasting contribution to both the FRVTA and the entire RV lifestyle community.
